Early Help is a pathway to supporting you and your child as they grow up when you or they may need further support or guidance.

At Birchen Coppice Primary Academy, we recognise that families can face challenges where extra help and support is needed.  We are always happy to help and encourage parents to contact school so we can provide help and support. There are many ways we can help and this is outlined in our offer. We can also help to plan specific support for families through Early Help assessments where we can all work together to achieve outcomes.

Providing early help to our pupils and families at Birchen Coppice Primary Academy means we can improve outcomes for children, families, and communities, providing support as soon as a problem emerges, at any point in a child’s life, from the early years through to year six.

Early Help can support children and their families who may be struggling with:

  • Routines and family rules
  • Families who may not be eating healthy food
  • Keeping to a healthy lifestyle
  • Children who are caring for a family member
  • Children who may not want to go to school for different reasons
  • Disability within the family including children being a young carer
  • Children in the family have special educational needs (SEND)
  • Children who have experienced trauma in their life
  • Children who are experiencing mental health concerns or are impacted by parental mental health concerns
  • Families that have recently been bereaved
  • Children who may becoming involved in anti-social or criminal behaviour
  • Children who go missing from home
  • Children or parents / carers misusing drugs or alcohol
  • Children at risk of being tricked, forced, or made to work in the criminal world
  • Children who may need support because they may live in a home and see drug or alcohol abuse or adult mental health problems.
  • Children who have parents who argue a lot (and sometimes might hurt each other) whether the parents live together or apart.
  • Children at risk of being groomed to join groups which support illegal views
  • A privately fostered child (a child from another family living within your family home)
  • Families who are experiencing problems financially or with housing issues

Early help relies upon local groups and people in the community, sometimes we work together to help children, young people, and their families.

School Support

At Birchen Coppice we have a range of support for our pupils and families.

Trauma Informed School.

At Birchen Coppice Primary Academy, we are a Trauma Informed School. We can provide a range of support for our pupils, to help them through trauma. Children are provided support on a one-to-one basis and it is tailored to meet their personal needs and concerns.

Attendance

Ensuring good attendance is critical to an individual pupils social and academic progress.  The school aims to work with parents to ensure good attendance for all pupils. Where concerns around attendance exist more personalised support will be provided by the school to help overcome the barriers that exist.

Our Curriculum

Within our PHSCE curriculum, all pupils are taught a range of strategies to cope with different concerns and situations they may face; helping them to recognise situations of concern, how to get help and develop a range of personal skills to utilise.

Support for Families

We are keen to signpost families to other groups within the local community who are also able to offer help and support to families. This can include referrals to the local foodbank, counselling, parenting workshops, emotional wellbeing and much more. Please contact the school office and Mrs Bull or Mrs Jeynes will be more than happy to discuss what we can do to support.

School Nurse

We have an allocated school nurse from School Health who we can discuss any health concerns or emotional needs with. She will be able to identify other ways in which support could be available for pupils and their families. Please contact school in the first instance and we will be happy to support you.

At Birchen Coppice Primary Academy, we meet the needs of our children through a variety of ways:

Pupil Voice – pupils are actively encouraged to speak about any concerns they have to a member of staff or to our nurture team. As part of the curriculum, children are taught to speak openly about their mental health and wellbeing. Pupils know the staff take all their concerns very seriously. There are other ways that the children can share their worries and concerns through worry boxes or worry monsters that are in every classroom.

  • Children’s questionnaires ascertain if pupils feel happy and safe and directly impact content of the My Life – our PSHE curriculum – for all year groups across school
  • Our curriculum gives opportunities for the children to learn how to look after their own safety and wellbeing and to help others to stay safe.
  • Assemblies, visitors and educational trips gives the children knowledge, skills and strategies to keep themselves safe.
  • Assemblies are delivered both by our staff and visitors concerning how to stay safe online. This is also embedded through our Computing curriculum.
  • Our school council play a major role in making sure that the pupil voice makes a difference to decisions made at school and they meet with Mrs Painter.
  • We are a Trauma Informed School. Staff have received training on the impact of trauma on behaviours and PACE.
  • Staff are available to meet and greet in the mornings.
  • Emotionally Available Adults are allocated to some children.
  • We identify which children have emotional needs across the whole school.
  • Lunchtime nurture groups.
  • We have effective communication between pupils and staff.
  • Staff have attended training in areas such as mental health and wellbeing, mindfulness, online safety, attachment.
  • Our Nurture Hub Room is available throughout the day for regular sessions and also for unexpected issues.
  • We work with school nurses.
  • We have links with the PCSOs.
  • We work with Starting Well and can host workshops in a variety of areas – Understanding children’s behaviours, Looking after yourself and Eating well for less and sleep hygiene clinics.
